System Description

The LumaVet Equine Handheld DR X-Ray System is a complete cordless imaging kit purpose-built for equine ambulatory and on-farm practice. A battery-powered handheld X-ray generator pairs with a 10×12″ wireless flat-panel DR detector and a field-ready laptop running DR acquisition software — the entire workflow runs from a single aluminium carry case, with no mains power required between charges.

Two X-ray generator options share the same kit: the lightweight handheld Mini90 (40–90 kV, 6–10 mA) for routine limb and dental imaging, and the ULTRA 9020BT high-frequency-inverter generator (1.35 kW, 12–20 mA, 0.32–30 mAs) for thicker anatomy and faster exposures. Both deliver 40–90 kV and accept the same wireless DR panel.

Key Features

  • Cordless, field-portable workflow: battery X-ray + wireless DR + laptop fits in a single aluminium hand-carry case for ambulatory and on-farm equine practice.
  • Two X-ray generator options on the same kit — Mini90 (90 kV / 10 mA, 0.32–20 mAs) for limb and dental work, or ULTRA 9020BT (90 kV / 20 mA, 0.32–30 mAs) high-frequency inverter for thicker anatomy.
  • 10×12 inch wireless flat-panel DR detector: 2048 × 1792 pixel matrix, 139 µm pixel pitch, 3.6 LP/mm spatial resolution, internal battery, 1.9 kg.
  • Tethered AED-style detector communication delivers preview-ready images within seconds of exposure.

  • ULTRA 9020BT generator: 1.35 kW HF inverter, 0.8 mm focal spot, 2.1 mm Al total filtration, Class 2 dual laser pointers, 7 standard + 12 extendable APR memory presets.
  • Battery operation: Li-polymer pack supports ~500 exposures at 80 kV / 2 mAs per charge (~3.5 h to full charge).
  • Bluetooth-paired smartphone app for remote control and APR recall.
  • LED collimator lamp (> 130 lux) with X-ray field size up to 27 × 27 cm at 66 cm SID for accurate beam-on-cassette alignment.
  • Universal-voltage input (100–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, single-phase) for in-clinic charging anywhere.
  • Overload protection on both the high-frequency generator and the X-ray tube.
  • Aluminium hand-carry case included for shipping and field transport.

Clinical Applications

Equine Distal LimbCarpus, fetlock, pastern, hoof and stifle imaging in standing-anaesthesia or fully cooperative patients — the primary use case for handheld DR.On-Farm & AmbulatoryFully cordless workflow eliminates dependence on stable mains power; the case + battery system supports a full day of barn-call radiography.Equine DentalMini90’s lower-power profile is appropriate for intra-oral and dental-arcade exposures with the small-area DR detector.Pre-Purchase ExaminationStandardised distal-limb survey series at the seller’s farm — same kit, same protocol, no re-installation between sites.Lameness Work-upHigh-resolution DR (3.6 LP/mm at 139 µm pitch) supports detailed evaluation of subchondral bone, joint margins and small avulsion fragments.Emergency & Field TraumaRapid deployment at the trauma site reduces transport stress for non-ambulatory patients.

Workflow & Installation Notes

  • Deployment: open the carry case at the stable or field site; the laptop, wireless detector and X-ray generator are pre-paired and ready within minutes. No mains power required.
  • Positioning: place the wireless DR panel behind the anatomy (cassette holder or assistant); aim the X-ray generator using the integrated dual lasers and level indicator; press the exposure trigger from either the generator handle or the Bluetooth app.
  • Acquisition: AED on the detector triggers automatically when exposure is detected; the image appears on the laptop DR software within seconds for immediate review and re-exposure decisions.
  • Radiation safety: handheld generators emit divergent X-rays — operate from behind or to the side, use lead PPE for all personnel within 2 m, and follow local radiation-protection regulations for ambulatory use.
  • Battery management: charge the generator from any 100–240 VAC outlet between sites; the Li-polymer pack supports approximately 500 exposures per charge and reaches full charge in ~3.5 hours (~2 hours with the external charger on the ULTRA 9020BT).
  • Cleaning: wipe generator, detector and laptop with a non-abrasive disinfectant between cases; do not immerse. The detector carbon-fibre front tolerates routine clinic disinfectants.

Why Choose the LumaVet Equine Handheld DR System

  • One case, full workflow. Generator, wireless detector and laptop in a single aluminium carry box — no separate stands, no mains tether, no setup between farm visits.
  • Generator choice without rebuilding the kit. Mini90 for routine limb / dental work or ULTRA 9020BT for higher-power thicker-anatomy exposures — both pair with the same wireless detector and laptop software.
  • True ambulatory imaging. Battery operation supports ~500 exposures per charge — a full day of pre-purchase exams, lameness work-ups or emergency trauma calls without recharging.
  • Direct read-out for re-exposure decisions. Wireless AED detector + DR software preview eliminates the back-and-forth of plate-cassette processing on standing horses.

FAQ

Which generator should I choose — Mini90 or ULTRA 9020BT?
Choose Mini90 if your caseload is dominated by distal-limb, hoof and dental imaging on standing horses — the lighter 6–10 mA output is sufficient and the dual-handle ergonomics shine for hands-free aiming. Choose ULTRA 9020BT if you regularly image thicker anatomy or want shorter exposure times — the 12–20 mA / 0.32–30 mAs envelope produces the same penetrating power at faster shutter speeds. Both pair with the same detector and software.
Is the system truly cordless?
Yes. The X-ray generator runs from an internal Li-polymer battery, the DR detector runs from its own internal battery, and the laptop runs from its standard battery. There is no obligatory mains tether during exposure — only between cases for recharging.
How many exposures per charge?
Approximately 500 exposures at 80 kV / 2 mAs on the X-ray generator’s primary battery. Detector and laptop have their own batteries with multi-hour runtimes. Realistic daily output covers a full barn-call schedule.
What is the wireless DR detector’s image quality?
2048 × 1792 pixel matrix at 139 µm pitch, 3.6 LP/mm limiting spatial resolution. Active imaging area 250.88 × 286.72 mm (≈ 10 × 12 inches) — the standard equine-distal-limb format.
Is the kit DICOM-compatible?
The bundled DR software supports DICOM export in the standard configuration. Specific DICOM service classes (Store, Worklist, Print, MWL) should be confirmed with the supplier at order time, especially when integrating with an existing PACS.
What radiation-protection precautions apply?
Handheld X-ray generators emit divergent radiation — operate from behind or to the side of the device, ensure all personnel within 2 m wear lead PPE, restrict the imaging zone to authorised staff, and follow your jurisdiction’s regulations for portable veterinary radiography. The Class 2 laser pointers help align the beam without unnecessary test exposures.
